April 26, 2008 - Drilling Side Strips

I pop-riveted the receptacles to the three top strips.  However, I didn't rivet them to the fuse, since the fuse forward top skin doesn't get riveted until the last possible moment -- so I can get access to behind the panel. 
 
Time to try out the Camlocs for the first time.  I attached the bottom cowl. 
 

The Camlocs work pretty well.  You push in with a screwdriver and give it a quarter turn to the right. 

I still have to adjust the stud head height on all of them -- but they will hold the cowl securely at this point.

 
This bottom right one wouldn't go in.  Later on, I fixed the problem by turning the receptacle barrell.
 
Next step was to put in the horizontal side strips.  The strip gets riveted to the bottom cowl, and the receptacles get riveted to the top of the strip. 
 
On the bottom cowl, I marked drilling holes about 1/4" down and every inch across, then match-drilled the cowl and strip.
 
I didn't just turn on the lights -- I set-up the camera differently.
 
With both side strips drilled, I installed the top cowl and taped down the sides securely. 
 
Then I match-drilled the top cowl -- a hole every 3 1/2".  You have to make sure the receptacle isn't going to hit the engine valve covers. 
 
 
 
 
With the pilot holes drilled, it was back down to the basement for drilling the receptacle mounting holes and opening the strip holes up to 11/16" with the Unibit. 
 
Then countersinking.
